What are My Options for an Unexpected Pregnancy?

What are My Options for an Unexpected Pregnancy?

“I’m pregnant. Now what?”

The news of an unexpected pregnancy can hit you like nothing ever before. You are bringing a new life into the world, which comes with a great amount of responsibility. It can be quite overwhelming but, rest assured, there are many resources to support you and provide you with options on how to proceed with your pregnancy.

Adoption Choices of Florida is here to provide you with the available options for an unexpected pregnancy.

Confirm Your Pregnancy

The first step to take is to confirm the pregnancy by going to your OBGYN, or if it’s your first time going to an OBGYN, finding one in your area. False positives with at-home pregnancy tests are quite rare (1-3%), so it is always recommended you visit your OBGYN after getting a positive result of your at-home test.

Not only does this serve to confirm that you are indeed pregnant, but it also ensures that you are in good health to deliver a baby. During your appointment, your healthcare provider can give you additional information as well, if you want to learn more about your options.

Seek Counseling

Once your pregnancy has been confirmed, it is strongly encouraged to seek counseling to help you process any and all emotions you are experiencing and to help you decide what you want to do. Adoption Choices of Florida offers free counseling services to all birth mothers who wish to learn about adoption being an option. Everything said within those sessions is kept confidential and is confined in a judgment-free, safe space.

If you choose to place your baby for adoption, the counselor can refer you to one of our caseworkers, who will  describe your options in detail, as well as what to expect from each one. They will also answer any questions and address all concerns you have.

Decide What You Want to Do

When it comes to deciding what you want to do about your unexpected pregnancy, you have three options to choose from. You can choose to parent your child, terminate your pregnancy or place your baby for adoption. There is no right or wrong decision to make. It’s entirely up to you. Each choice comes with its own pros and cons, so it’s important to learn as much as you can about what each entails before making a final decision.

  • Parent Your Child - If you’ve always dreamed of having a family one day, life may have just blessed you in the most unexpected way. While the timing wasn’t exactly what you had in mind, raising a child from an unplanned pregnancy is not impossible! However, you want to make sure to ask yourself the following questions:

    • Can I give my baby the life he or she deserves?

    • Am I able to physically, financially, emotionally and mentally ready to parent my child?

    • Am I ready to be a parent?

Answering these questions honestly will help you determine your readiness, so you aren’t caught off guard later on.

  • Terminate Your Pregnancy - If you are not ready to raise your child, or you feel the timing isn’t right, you can choose to terminate your pregnancy. Keep in mind that abortion laws vary from state to state. You’ll want to call your local Planned Parenthood to ask what is and isn’t permitted where you live.

In Florida, adoption is legal, though it does have restrictions. For instance, any pregnancy past 24 or more weeks are eligible for the termination procedure only in cases of life-threatening circumstances. Individuals under the age of 18 must have parental consent, and the parents must be notified before the procedure can occur. Additionally, any and all birth mothers wanting to terminate their pregnancy must receive state-directed counseling to discuss other options and to make sure that she is fully aware of what she is committing to.

  • Place Your Baby for Adoption - The third and final option for an unplanned pregnancy is placing your baby for adoption. Because parenthood isn’t currently the right option for you, adoption allows you to give your child the best chance at life. You have full control over the entire adoption process. You can choose what type of adoption you want -- closed, open or semi-open -- and select the adoptive parents who will raise your baby.
